The S22 Is in Its Last Year of Software Support
This is the part that is actually urgent, and it has a date attached.
The Galaxy S22 series launched in February 2022 running Android 12. Samsung promised four major OS upgrades and five years of security fixes, and it has delivered all four of the OS upgrades. The phones are on One UI 8.0 now and are expected to get One UI 8.5 later this year, which will be the last one.
What has already changed is the security patches. Samsung has moved the S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra off the monthly cycle and onto a quarterly one. The January 2026 patch was the most recent, and roughly four or five more are expected before new updates stop. From 2027, Samsung stops providing them.

If you are using the phone, it is still fine for now. A quarterly patch cycle is slower than monthly but it is not nothing, and the phone works. Once updates stop, we would suggest keeping it off banking and work email rather than throwing it away.
If you are thinking about selling, the date matters more than the condition. Prices do not drift toward the end of support, they step down when it arrives, because that is when every buyer in the market finds out at once. The window to sell into is the one that is open right now.

Why the Ultra Is Worth Four Times the Standard S22
Both launched in February 2022. Same week, same shop, same queue. Four years later one of them is worth four and a half times the other.

When the phones are new the gap is roughly double, which is close to what the gap was at retail. By year three it has stretched to five or six times. The standard model falls toward the floor and the Ultra keeps a real value.
The reason is who buys a four-year-old Samsung. They are not buying it to have the newest thing, they are buying a big screen, a battery that lasts and, on the Ultra, the S Pen. The Ultra was built around all three. The standard S22 was the small one in the range, and small phones have the thinnest second-hand market of anything we handle.

What Four Years Does to the Battery
On a phone this age it is the single biggest thing deciding your grade, and it is the one most people have not checked.
A Galaxy S22 charged daily since February 2022 has been through four years of cycles. In practice that means most unrepaired units are now well down on their original capacity, and the phone will usually tell you so if you look.

On the Ultra, sell it. On the standard S22, it is genuinely a closer call than we would normally admit.
The Ultra still carries a real number and it has a date on the horizon that will take some of that away. Selling into the current window is the straightforward move.
The standard S22 at the Fair grade is worth less than most people expect, and at that level the honest question is whether you want the money or whether the phone is more useful to you as something else. A second handset for a work number. A travel phone you would not mind losing. A spare for somebody in the family who is about to need one. Those are real uses and at this price they can beat selling.
What is not a reason is leaving it in a drawer undecided. A phone that is not being used loses value every month and the battery degrades while it sits. If you are going to keep it, keep it for a reason.
