Leaving the UAE? What to Do With Your iPhone or Samsung Before You Fly
Before you fly out of the UAE for good, do five things with your phone: move WhatsApp and your bank codes to a new number, clear your du or e& bill, decide whether to keep your UAE number, wipe the phone properly, and then sell it or pack it. The order matters. Do it the wrong way round and you can lock yourself out of your own accounts.
Leaving Dubai is busy enough. The flat, the car, the visa, the bank, the goodbyes. The phone usually gets left to the last day, and that is where people get caught: a SIM cancelled before WhatsApp was moved, a final bill that follows them home, or a phone sold for less because it was rushed. This guide puts everything in the right order.

The Short Answer: 5 Things to Do Before You Fly
- Move your logins off your UAE number: WhatsApp, Apple Account or Samsung account, banks, and any app that sends you codes by SMS.
- Clear your du or e& bill, including exit fees and any device instalments.
- Decide on your number: cancel it, or keep it with a prepaid pack.
- Back up and wipe the phone, and remove it from your Apple or Samsung account.
- Sell it or pack it, in the last two or three days before your flight.
Your Leaving-the-UAE Phone Countdown
Most problems come from doing the right things at the wrong time. Here is the order that works.
When
What to do
2 to 3 weeks before
Check your phone's price on our calculator and decide: sell or take it home. Check your du or e& contract end date and ask about exit fees and instalments.
1 to 2 weeks before
Get a SIM for your next country if you can, or an eSIM. Add that number to WhatsApp, your Apple Account or Samsung account and your banks. Back up your photos.
3 to 5 days before
Book your phone pickup or buyer. If you are selling, keep a cheap spare phone or a second SIM for the last days.
48 hours before
Cancel your postpaid plan (e& asks for at least 48 hours) and pay the final balance. Or buy a prepaid pack to keep the number.
Last 1 to 2 days
Wipe the phone, remove your accounts and hand it over. Keep the payment receipt and the buyer's details with your travel papers.
Before You Cancel Your UAE Number: Move These First
Your UAE number is the key to a lot of accounts. Once the SIM is cancelled, you can no longer receive the codes that let you change them. Do these while the SIM still works.
Go to Settings > Account > Change number and enter your new number. Your chats, groups and settings move with you, and you can choose to tell your contacts. You need to receive a code on the new number, so do this once your new SIM or eSIM is active.
Apple Account or Samsung account
On an iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security and add a trusted phone number from your next country. On Samsung, update the phone number in your Samsung account settings. If your UAE number is the only one on the account, you may struggle to sign in to a new phone later.
Banks, cards and payment apps
Update the mobile number on any bank account or card you will keep using, in the UAE or abroad. Many UAE banks send one-time codes only by SMS. If you are closing a UAE account, do it before you cancel the number, because closing usually needs a code too.
UAE Pass and government apps
If you will still need UAE Pass after you leave, for example for end-of-service or property matters, update the mobile number in your profile first.
How to Cancel du or e& Before You Leave
Both companies let you cancel and pay your final bill before you fly. The steps are slightly different.
e&
du
How to cancel
Call800-6665 at least 48 hours before you leave
Call 155 or visit a du store
What you need
Your account details and a card to pay
Your Emirates ID and account number
What gets charged
Outstanding balance plus any exit fee
Outstanding balance plus any exit fee
Keep the number?
Yes, with a Homebound Pack (prepaid)
Ask du about current options
e& details from its Leaving UAE page, checked October 2026. du details should be confirmed with du before you cancel.
Exit fees are capped. Since January 2020, UAE rules limit the charge for leaving a mobile contract early toone month's rental. Device instalments are separate: whatever is left on your phone is normally added to your final bill.
Do not leave a bill behind. An unpaid bill does not create an automatic travel ban, but the company can chase the debt and may file a police case if the amount is large, asThe National explains. That can stop you at the airport, or cause trouble if you ever come back. Pay it, and keep the confirmation.
Want to Keep Your UAE Number?
Some people keep their number for a few months to receive bank codes or calls from a former employer. e& offers a Homebound Pack for this:
Pack
Price (incl. VAT)
Valid for
Homebound Pack 100
AED 105
30 days
Homebound Pack 400
AED 420
30 days
Homebound Pack 600
AED 630
60 days
When the pack ends, the number goes back to e&. If you only need the number for a few weeks, this is usually cheaper than leaving a postpaid plan running.
Sell Your Phone or Take It Home?
There is no single right answer. It depends on where you are going and how old your phone is.
Your situation
What usually makes sense
Moving to a country where phones cost more
Take it home, especially if it is a recent model
Your home country taxes phones brought from abroad
Check the tax first; selling here is often simpler
You plan to buy a new phone soon anyway
Sell here, while UAE prices for your model are known
Old model, weak battery or a cracked screen
Sell here; it is worth more in cash than as luggage
You need it for the first weeks abroad
Take it, or sell it and buy a cheap phone for the move
Example: Pakistan. Phones brought into Pakistan must be registered with the PTA. Since mid-2025, overseas Pakistanis can register one phone tax-free for a limited period per visit, as GulfNews reported, but a phone kept longer is taxed. If you are moving back for good, check the tax on your model before you decide. Rules in India, the Philippines and other countries are different, so check with your own customs authority.
Before You Sell: Wipe It Properly
Do this only after your new number is working everywhere.
- Back up to iCloud, Google or Samsung Cloud, or to a computer.
- Turn off Find My (iPhone) or Find My Mobile (Samsung).
- Sign out of your Apple Account, or remove your Samsung and Google accounts. If you reset a Samsung without removing them, it locks. Our guide on removing your Samsung account before selling shows every step.
- Delete your eSIM if it is your UAE line you are cancelling, and take out any physical SIM.
- Factory reset and wait for the welcome screen.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I sell my phone before leaving the UAE?
If your phone is only a year or two old and you are moving to a country where phones cost more or carry import tax, keeping it can make sense. If you are upgrading soon anyway, or your home country charges tax on phones brought from abroad, selling in Dubai is usually simpler. Check your price with our calculator first so you can compare.
When should I sell my phone if I am leaving Dubai?
Sell it in the last two or three days before your flight, after you have moved WhatsApp, banking and other logins to a new number. Until then you need the phone for OTP codes, calls from buyers of your other things and your airline check-in.
How do I cancel my e& postpaid plan before leaving the UAE?
e& asks you to call 800-6665 at least 48 hours before you fly. The agent checks your outstanding balance and any exit fee, and you can pay by card on the same call.
How do I cancel du before leaving the UAE?
Call du on 155 or visit a du store with your Emirates ID. Ask for your final balance, including any exit fee or device instalments, pay it, and keep the written confirmation or reference number.
What happens if I leave the UAE with an unpaid phone bill?
An unpaid bill does not create an automatic travel ban, but the company can chase the debt and may register a police case if the amount is large. That can cause problems at the airport or if you return to the UAE later. It is far easier to clear the bill before you go.
Can I keep my UAE number after I leave?
Yes, with e&. Prepaid customers can buy a Homebound Pack, from AED 105 for 30 days. Postpaid customers must first move to a Wasel prepaid plan. Ask du about its current options before you cancel.
What should I do before cancelling my UAE SIM?
Move WhatsApp to your new number, add a new trusted phone number to your Apple Account or Samsung account, and update the number on your bank accounts and any UAE apps you still need. Once the SIM is cancelled you cannot receive the codes to do this.
Can I sell my phone if it is still on a du or e& instalment plan?
Clear the remaining instalments first. They are added to your final bill when you cancel, and a phone with an unpaid balance can cause problems for you and the buyer. [TEAM TO CONFIRM: whether we buy phones with instalments still running.]
